Author Tom Clancy introduced the character of Jack Ryan in a series of books before Ryan headed to the big screen in several films. Now the former U.S. Marine is featured in a series for the first time, with John Krasinski portraying Ryan in this Amazon original thriller that centers on Ryan as an up-and-coming CIA analyst. He is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time and uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the middle of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

I love modern day television, man. No one would have blamed John Krasinski if he never hit the small screen again after the last episode of The Office in twenty-thirteen. After that he remade himself as a hunky and legit action star (him and Chris Pratt have had very similar careers). He did Aloha, 13 Hours, and obviously his big star AND directorial debut breakout, A Quiet Place. But, modern day television is wonderful and we get to see John be a bad ass and completely carry this thing for 2 seasons strai

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is not a BAD show, not by any means. The first season is actually really really good. What it suffers from is what I call “Friday Night Lights Syndrome”. What that is, is a show with a stellar first season followed by a complete drag of a second season… The first season of Jack Ryan had pretty much everything I wanted out of this show when I signed up for it. It was action packed, intriguing, believable, the whole package. John Krasinski is at his best when he is playing the every-man, whether it be in comedy, drama, or action, he is good at playing a normal guy thrust into crazy situations. If Die Hard was cast today he’d be the perfect McClain. The narrative structure and style of this show is also really interesting, bouncing from different perspectives and sometimes even characters completely removed from our actual story… The first season was suspenseful, plot-driven, with complex villians, and a realistic romance line with, what I must say, was amazing chemistry between Jack and Cathy (who is actually played by Australian rapper, MC Dusk).

Season two, the new one, however, was a big big let down. Inexplicably, his love interest Cathy was taken out of the show without ever being addressed. She was more tha a love interest, though their chemistry was golden, she was something that grounded the character of Jack and revealed his background, and showed a different side. On top of that, without addressing it for more than a passing conversation, he is not OUT of the CIA. How is that not a huge thing? I also couldn’t give a rats ass about the villian, I can barely remember what looks like he is so forgettable. I kept watching because John Krasinski is great and carried the hell out of this slogfest, but damn was it hard.

Its unfortunate to see another show fall victim to failing to live up to it’s own writing standards after only one season, but I am optimistic about season three despite it basically being a year from now. So, if Jack Ryan is all you care about but you’re not sure if a third season is worth a watch, check back in in a year. I’ll watch it, because I watch everything.
