My Game of Thrones Finale Thoughts and Review

Eight years of television for a show that is long argued to be the best show ever made, only contended by Breaking Bad, and The Wire. Seventy-One episodes that have captivated millions upon millions of people… All of it was wrapped up last night in what many people are calling the worst finale they have ever seen, to wrap up a disappointing and lazy final season. I’m here to give my thoughts on the ending.

Although I’m not as bent out of shape as most people, I am still at least slightly disappointed with most things, and angry with others. Lets just start with the biggest thing I, along with everyone else, was waiting to see. Character endings. I wanted to see where all my favorite characters were being left the last time I ever got to be with them!

Jon: Rightful king of the seven kingdoms, and the prince who was promised. The bastard we followed from day one to oath into the nights watch only to become lord commander and eventually king in the north. What does the man who came from nothing do? Kills Daenerys and then just kinda fucks off to the north. I do get it. I really really do. Jon never wanted the throne, but he was thrust into power because he deserved it and earned it. He would have been best for the seven/six kingdoms… His ending was never quite explained in a way that made sense either. He was exiled to a wall that serves no purpose anymore, in a kingdom that is independent and now ran buy his sister, to appease a group of people that all left on boats anyway. Jon gets to hang out in the north with the people he loves, and grow old peacefully. He’s happy, but he is the only one better off for it and all the holes in the forcing of it is just lazy writing.

Daenerys: Dead. I’m fine with her being dead, and I’m one of the few people it seams that is completely fine with her story arc. I saw her going mad from the very beginning and Tyrion was right when he listed off all the horrible things she has done to horrible people. Her thirst for power and self righteous ways have been subtle and long winded building up. In episode five she threw a wrench into everything and threw off everything I thought I knew in a very predictable final season as a whole.

Arya: When Sandor told her to go away so she wouldn’t be like him, and you saw something click in Arya’s head, it was a great moment. A great ending for their relationship and I had high hopes for Arya’s ending. Now, personally I wanted her to go to Storms End to be with Gendry, but I know that’s not her. Her being a pirate/explorer is very her and makes total sense. It doesn’t take away from the fact however that its completely unsatisfying. She is our girl, she has been our girl since season one. She has the best story of everyone and I feel like its too basic of a way to finish it off. I can live with it though, I guess.

Sansa: Sansa’s ending is the only one I am truly content with. Sansa is a fantastic ruler that for a while now I thought had to be the lady of Winterfell. Queen of the north for an independent kingdom is even better. I went from absolutely despising her in season one to her being one of the best on the final season. She has been through so much suffering that has made her strong. She has learned from Little Finger, and Cersei, who though terrible people are brilliant, and yet she has the compassion and love for her people and home that her father did. If Jon is not the king in the north, no one deserves the crown next more than she does.

Bran: Bran’s story has been by for the most boring and worthless this entire time. His journey to become the three-eyed-raven feels dumb at this point as it has served very little purpose. His character is awkward as hell and just… Boring. The fact that he become the king makes me ridiculously angry as it makes absolutely no sense. I get it, he’s impartial because he is unfeeling. Who gives a shit?! What in the hell has this guy ever done for anyone else or done to deserve the throne. Nothing, complete and utter jack shit. “Who has a better story than Bran Stark.” So many people, almost everyone in this entire series. He got a unanimous vote to be king? Bullshit he did.

Tyrion: Tyrion’s job is the be the hand. Doesn’t really matter to who, since he has been one many times for many people, and been very bad at it every time. The fact that he is hand again is so stupid. Give it to Davos. Give it to Davos. A good man that was actually good at his job… I was expecting ore for Tyrion. Something out of left field. Something Different. But nope, same old thing… His council is also the biggest joke I’ve ever seen.

There is lots of other small things both good and bad. Like after so many years and build up the Night King feels like a subplot in the end. Or that Jamie’s arc was completely ruined. Theon got a great ending that did his arc justice at least.

In the end, unpredictable is good, but only if it  makes sense. Don’t do something completely out of character as a writer, just because your readers or watchers won’t see it coming. Every time you do that it ruins our experience just a little bit more. Don’t do something we want if it feels like fan service, that isn’t what we want. Don’t sacrifice realism and charm for something epic. This season and this finale did all the DON’T’S I can think of and I was let down for it. Game of Thrones as a whole has not been ruined for me, but It has been less than twenty four hours and I’m left unsatisfied and uncaring. I shouldn’t feel that way about something that’s been in my life almost a decade.

Anthem: my first thoughts

Anthem is a game that is not only widely anticipated, but highly anticipated within my close knit group of friends… Destiny was big for me and everyone I game with and when Destiny 2 came out I was very ecstatic. Unfortunately, Destiny 2 was a major let down and fell off of my radar rather quickly. I, along with everyone else, have kept myself busy with Overwatch been have been starved for a new MMO. Well, I’m very happy to say that if you are in this same boat than this will fill that hole.

Anthem is an MMORPG, or “Massively-Miltiplayer-Online-Role-Playing-Game”. Though I have never played Warframe I hear it compared to that quite a bit. I feel it is HEAVILY like Destiny though. Like Destiny it is a shooter with heavily customizable loudouts, looting systems, and co-op missions. On the surface however two aspects set the games apart. Anthem is a third person shooter instead of first and allows you to pick from multiple different exosuits, or Javelins. The Javelins play different roles in combat such as tank, distance, speed, and all-around. I like this a lot because I always felt MMO’s on console lacked roles in combat.

As for the gameplay itself it is is very smooth. Combat makes you feel powerful yet still becomes overwhelming if you get carried away. Flying is fun and feels like you’re Iron Man. The visuals are fantastic with the world being really unique and just awesome to look at when you’re not getting shot.

All around I think this game will be a hit as long as EA doesn’t make the same mistakes they have in the past. But as for BioWare, I think they are back to the makers we know and love.

Overwatch League

Overwatch League (or OWL) opening day is today! For those of you that are unfamiliar with Overwatch, go put in 100+ hours of gameplay and come back. For those of you unfamiliar with the new OWL, than time to get familiar because it looks absolutely amazing. OWL is the newest of any tournament in eSports and looks to revolutionize everything we know about eSports. OWL follows a traditional model for sports with set teams, and a long season with games being played over a many months span. Players are brought on to teams and payed a yearly salary. For many people, along with myself, this is all extremely exciting for many reasons. Never before has there been the ability to follow a team and watch the game as if one would with the Lions in the NFL. Now, we have that opportunity and if all goes well maybe many others will follow in Blizzards example.

The preseason aired in December and was amazing to watch. Admittedly I’ve never really watched professional Overwatch. After the fall of Starcraft 2 I never quite got the same enjoyment out of eSports tournaments again… However, this is on a whole new level. Everything is professionally and beautifully done with great casters and hosts. Every team feels just like that. A TEAM. It’s hard not to pick one right from the start. If you’d like to re-watch some of the matches than you can check them out here. I personally am rooting for Boston Uprising run by man Chris “HuK” Loranger.

overwatch league teams.pngThere are twelve teams from all over the world (mainly from the USA) competing. In order on the picture is…

  • Florida Mayhem
  • London Spitfire
  • Los Angeles Gladiators
  • Los Angeles Valient
  • New York Exclsior
  • Philadelphia Fusion
  • San Francisco Shock
  • Seoul Dynasty
  • Shanghai Dragons
  • Houston Outlaws
  • Dallas Fuel
  • Boston Uprising

Favored to win the inaugural season of OWL is Seoul Dynasty with London Spitfire and Dallas Fuel considered large contenders. Florida Mayhem and, surprisingly, the Shanghai Dragons sit at the bottom of the list. Just like anything else though, it is anyone’s game! So, pick your favorite, paint your face, throw a viewing party, and tune in with me tonight at 7pm EST!

My Love of Starcraft

Explaining my love of Starcraft to someone who doesn’t feel the same way is very difficult. The easiest way I can think to describe it is the way many feel about sports. I played Starcraft competitively for a long time, and it quickly became an obsession of mine. At first it was just a normal game, then I started watching streams on a daily basis. I’d tune into tournaments whenever possible. I followed the players, developed strategies, attended tournaments, competed in tournaments… It quickly became for than just a game, it became my life. I myself was a Zerg player, and my handle was WyrmZ. I thought it was catchy and I had a tendency to back-door nydus worm people. I had a group of friends that also had aspiring goals of becoming a pro-player. That was everyone’s goal if we are completely honest with ourselves. We wanted to be among the greats; our idols. We wanted to play in the EG house and have a seat next to IdrA and InControl. We would log on Skype and play for hours, all while making strategies and timing our plays down to the exact second… This was a daily occurrence. I would go to school in the morning and read strategy handbooks and memorize everything about the units. I would come home and play until I had to go to sleep and then repeat. When it came time for tournaments we would drop everything we were doing for the weekend and hold viewing parties.

All of this was back in 2011-2013. I still love Starcraft but, with its fall from grace accompanied with the impact it was having on my life I stopped playing. Much like sports, where I played (like one would play football in college) and then stopped, but the love remained I continue to watch and I continue to sit around with my friends, reminiscing about the good ol’ days of Wings of Liberty while watching low-level tournaments. I am very sad that Starcraft isn’t what it use to be, but at the same time the community is still there. At any given point I can boot it up and play. On top of that, whenever I do just have a simple discussion with somebody about it, it brings me great joy. The time that Starcraft 2 was in the spotlight was brief, but it will always be one of my, and many others favorite times.

Iron Man is better than Batman: Why Batman is terrible

ironman-vs-batman.jpg

An argument I have had for some time is whether Iron Man or Batman is better. Both share a lot of similarities, the largest being that they both have no super hero abilities, unless you count being filthy rich… I believe strongly that Iron Man is not only better than Batman, but, that Batman is a terrible super hero.  (Disclaimer: I am not a big comic book reader so my arguments will be made solely referencing the movie universe.)

Lets start with the super hero suits themselves.  Bruce Wayne is worth about 9.2 billion dollars, while Tony Stark is worth around 12.4 billion dollars. To any normal person three billion dollars is a lot of money! However, when you look at it in that amount there is nothing you can do with 9 billion you can’t do with 12. So I ask you, why is the bat suit leagues worse than the Iron Man suit? Yes, the suit Batman wears looks really cool, I will give you that. However, The Iron man suit is equipped with missiles, guns, energy weapons, an AI software, it can fly, is made of METAL, and a lot more. And it is clear it didn’t cost him much more because Tony has made near fifty of them already. On top of that, Bruce wasn’t trying to save money while making his suit because he orders hundreds of face pieces just to disguise wanting one for himself!.. Now, what you could say is that Batman has the batmobile, the batwing and his super computer in the bat cave, BUT, Tony doesn’t need any of those things because it is all already equipped in his one suit.

Alright, hopefully now I have convinced you that Bruce Wayne made a terrible decision to make the suit he did. Now I will convince you on why Bruce Wayne is just a terrible person! Isn’t this fun?.. So, Wayne enterprises is a very large corporation with a lot of money. The company does many, many things. One of which, largely supported by Bruce’s father Thomas, is charity. Thomas was a large supporter in helping the under privileged and supporting Gotham in any way he could. He would donate money, homeless shelters, and even built a train system to help people get to work! Not only did Bruce stop helping the poor he actually DESTROYED that train. Bruce Wayne could do much more for Gotham if he donated money, helped the poor, and pretty much everything his father did. Unfortunately he chose to run around looking like a bat instead. Tony’s father on the other hand, as well as Tony Himself, developed weapons and sold them to the highest bidder. Tony stopped that to help people.

Sure, without the suits Bruce would kick Tony’s ass. Bruce is basically a ninja and Tony is just a regular guy. Yet, despite that, Iron Man is a much better super hero. Bruce doesn’t want to help people, if he actually did he would follow in his fathers footsteps to help Gotham. Bruce wants to beat people up while satisfying his leather fetish.

My New Book!

As many of you have probably noticed I have been quite absent the last month, though I have tried to stay a little active. Well, that reason is because I have been doing work preparing for the release of my second book which came out this morning! Some of you may or may not know that I am a (self) published author as well as running this site. I couple years back I released my first book entitled Blackout that did pretty well as far as sales and reviews went! Since then I have been struggling to find a new novel to write and came up with a solution… Entertainment 100 is a collection of one hundred of my early favorite posts from my website, now in novel form. It is volume 1 and I will be releasing a new volume between every novel I write. It is listed at $9.99 cents and is being released just in time for the holidays! Of course, you can also get Blackout, my first novel, for the same price if you like my writing style you have seen so for!
