10 Cloverfield Lane movie review

Lets get something straight really quick… This is NOT a sequel. It is possible it is set in the same universe, but that seems loose. This is just an incredibly good marketing strategy. Another good marketing strategy? Not letting us know it exists until a couple months ago! That is damn smart. Anyway, 10 Cloverfield Lane follows Michelle. Michelle has run away from her fiance for reasons we don’t know… In the middle of the night she gets in a horrible car crash and wakes up in a bunker with 2 men. Howard, a giant hulking man with conspiracy theories and anger problems. And Emmett, a kind man that helped build the bunker and reassures her the world has actually ended…This movie is great. As you would have guessed John Goodman is the screen stealer in this. Every frame he is in is deeply unsettling. Howard is an unnerving man and no one could have played him but Goodman. Don’t get me wrong though, Winstead and Gallegher do their jobs FANTASTICALLY… But, I had to IMDB their names. 10 Cloverfield Lane does an excellent job of creating suspense, getting you on the edge of your seat, and making you hold your breath. The music in this a is a big contributing factor. Very 80’s! BUT, it has it’s down times… Towards the beginning of the movie it is quite boring. The first half hour crawls by as it takes forever to reach where it is going for the story to actually start. Other than that though, for a movie set completely in a bunker it is surprisingly entertaining. It makes me wonder if it HAD to be in a bunker because 90% of the budget was spent on John Goodman! Worth it though… Last but now least, never expect to know what is going to happen in this. Because what you think will happen definitely won’t… Especially in the end.

Cloverfield movie review

So I want it to be known that I actually like this movie quite a bit. I’m a sucker for found footage and apocalypse movies. That being said I have to shit all over this because it is not a good movie. Fun? Sometimes! Original? Meh… Good monster? Well, kinda. Likeable? For some reason! Good? Hell no! So the premise of Cloverfield is very simple. A monster from somewhere attacks New York for some reason. A group of friends consisting of the funny/stupid guy, and a ball of pointless relationship drama venture out to save their friend. Like I said, this movie is enjoyable for reasons I can’t figure out. But, if you turn off your brain and focus on the carnage you will enjoy most of this! But, it’s also rittled with shit. It’s found footage so the camera work is fucking terrible. Not JUST terrible though… You can never see anything. T.J. Miller (I don’t know his name in the movie but he was funny) films everything in this movie, but when cool stuff is going down he screams and points the camera at the ground… The plot is nearly unfollowable even though it is stupid simple, and the end is shit… On the bright side you get to see a monster destroy NYC whenever the guy holding the camera calms the fuck down!

First off, I just want to say that the marketing team for this movie is full of geniuses… 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer is difficult to review, because I don’t know anything about this movie. But, that is also the great part… I don’t know anything about this movie! I know it is set in a bunker. I know the girl wants out. I know there is something outside. And I know it stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World), John Gallagher Jr. (The News Room), and John Goodman (lots of shit)… That’s it! That is all I know! In all fairness the minute and a half I saw looks good though. But, I’m going to see this movie because of the marketing. The Marketing was PERFECT. Nobody knew this movie was coming out, much less being made. Releasing this in 2 months is perfect, because the excitement will still be here. People will still be talking and be anxious. I’m excited for this movie, no matter what it is.
