Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie review

It may not surprise anyone when I say I didn’t enjoy this movie, given that is a popular opinion at this point, but it breaks my heart none the less. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is a sequel to “Where to Find Them” and follows the uprising of the universes most famous dark wizard. Now, I feel it must be stated that my wife and I are huge Harry Potter fans, both of us sporting tattoos and collectibles. I am however a much bigger fan than her. I enjoyed the first installment of the series, liking the twists it put on the things I already loved without ruining itself or relying on the Harry Potter series too much. It marketed itself as completely separate except for the world itself. I respected and liked that. I went it to this movie with high hopes and they were dashed away rather quickly into it.

The movie opens with one of the most bad ass magic fights we have had since the finale of Order of the Phoenix. The stunning visuals coupled with score of John Williams are breathtaking. That is, unfortunately, the peak of the movie. Shortly after this it spirals into a cluster of confusing plots, characters that go nowhere, and references that are shoved down your throat every few minutes to distract you from how boring this movie actually is. This truly saddens me to write because I am someone that will quite regularly throw in a Harry Potter movie to relax during a rough time.

There are so many main plots, sub plots, character arcs, and everything else that it is honestly just hard to follow. At the end of it I wasn’t sure what was important, what was going on, or if it was even over. Because of this it made the big twist at the end more confusing rather than anything else and I left the theater completely unsatisfied.

The actors in this are good. Eddie Redmayne as Newt is still amazing and the best part of this movie. The movie is less focused on him than the first one however and it suffers from it. I don’t believe it needed to be focused on him completely but if they didn’t want to they needed to make the other characters just as interesting. Jude Law as Dumbeldore was great but he had barely any screen time. Johhny Depp was a nice cast for Grindelwald, but they gave him nothing to do, wasting the character and actor at the same time. Any time spent with Credence, played by Ezra Miller, brought the movie to a screeching halt and we were with him a lot.

The icing on the cake for me was the references. References were everywhere, handed to you on a silver platter, trying to distract you from what you were watching by reminding you of the good times. But it didn’t work. I was only reminded that I wasn’t watching those movies instead. I wanted this movie to succeed on its own. I didn’t want it to rely on my love for its predecessor. A few call backs would have been fine, welcome even, but it was clear it KNEW it wasn’t good. It was clear it WANTED  me distracted and reminiscing.

Writing this review doesn’t make me happy. In fact it disappoints, and saddens me that I am writing it. But it is honest. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is boring, and expects to get by purely on your love of Harry Potter to make money with it’s next three movies. It is nothing more than a shameful cash-grab filler.

Game Over, Man trailer review

gom_vertical-main_rgb

Okay, that was kind of funny. You have to admit that you got a laugh out of the last bit where they were shooting near each other. Game Over, Man is a Netflix Original comedy starring the guys from Workaholics with the creators, writers, and exact comedy style of Workaholics. Basically if you like Workaholics you will love it. The movie follows three guys that get stuck in a tower and have to take out the terrorists from the inside. To me at least I see it as a Die Hard spoof movie. It may not be marketing it that way but, c’mon… If you know me or follow me you now I’m a sucker for comedies and will see this and laugh my ass off. I know it will be stupid, probably without an ounce of sustenance in it, but a laugh is good. If you can’t handle stupid comedies than without a doubt this won’t be for you. But, hey, it’s Netflix. You don’t even have to leave your couch or pay for it.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer review

This trailer is undeniably awesome. Of course it is, there is no way they would have given us anything less than spectacular for the second Jurassic World movie (and fifth Jurassic Park). Unfortunately though, in order to make it awesome a lot was revealed that I wish wasn’t and I bet you anything that the scene where they run away from the volcano is one of the last scenes in the movie, put into this two minute trailer. Jeff Goldblum being in this and saying his famous line, “life finds a way”, is jaw dropping for sheer reminiscence alone. Would it have been better to hold off on Goldblum until the movie and REALLY blow us away? Absolutely. Either way, this trailer was fantastic, but sometimes that comes at a great expense of the movie-going experience.

PS. Kinda bummed that Owen and Claire already broke up, but I’ll bet you any money they get back together by the end of the film.

Avengers: Infinity War trailer review

Now, I’m not a HUGE Marvel fan so I don’t know everything there is to know about this universe. However, I’m also not insane or been living under a rock, so I’ve obviously seen all the MCU movies at this point (some more than others). What I do know though, just from watching this trailer, is that this movie has the potential to make every other MCU movie look boring by comparison! The biggest reveal of them all is clearly Thanos, a foe we have been preparing for almost 6 years now, that until this point had just been sitting in a chair and made of bad CGI. To me the second biggest reveal was The Guardians of the Galaxy for a split second at the end of the trailer. Something that I have thought a lot about ever since 2014 with the original Guardians movie was how they were going to tie in with the MCU, and if we would ever get to see them fight alongside the Avengers. To me, and everyone else I assume, their movies seemed completely separate from everyone else’s. I don’t know if they will fight this movie, or maybe they showed us the after credit sequence it the trailer! Either way, it was awesome… Another couple of things worth mentioning are emo Captain America, the addition of Dr. Strange, Caucasian vision, and the return of Hulk. Dr. Strange was another hero who’s addition to the group confused me slightly with how it will be done. Where the Guardians are far more advanced, technologically speaking, Dr. Strange’s powers will be almost overpowering in my opinion. I hope they don’t “nerf” him. Human looking Vision took me back for a second, and Thanos taking his forehead rock (yes, I know what it is called) took be back for a moment. I’m very interested to not only see why he is normal looking, but to see if he even lives!.. Oh! Spidey is in this too, obviously. After his hit of a movie, not throwing him in anything you possibly can would just be stupid! A couple changes though. He appears to have Spidey-senses now, which is a damn good thing too because he sucked at fighting without them! He also appears to have a new suit for some reason… I feel like I have been talking about Spider-Man’s new suit ever couple years for most of my life at this point. Either way, I’m not a fan… Out of the whole trailer though, that is about the only thing I’m not a fan of. It was action packed and smart. Teased just enough of what I needed to get me interested while still telling me absolutely nothing overall. It was also darker than most MCU movies seem, which I hope stays true in the actual movie. Either way though we all know I’m going to see this, and we all now you are going to see this, just like everyone else!

Rampage trailer review

rampage-2-1058994.jpg

Probably going to be one of the only good movies based off of a game and it’s Rampage… That is extremely hilarious to me… Rampage, if you don’t know, is an old video game with a very simple concept. Destroy the city faster than your friends destroy the city. Be either a huge gorilla, wolf, or crocodile. Not only does it appear that the essence of meaningless destruction and awesomeness was captured in this, but they also threw in Dwayne Johnson for good measure! I’m going to go see this in theaters not because there is ANY part of me that thinks this will be a good film, but because it will be super bad ass to watch on the big screen with surround sound.

PS. If that wolf or gorilla die I will be very upset.
